How to read a deal announcement

One sentence can tell you who wanted a book, how badly, and where it will travel. Here is the code.

A deal announcement is a compressed piece of writing. In a single line it names who bought a book, who sold it, which parts of the world the deal covers and how it was done. Read enough of them and you can see the market moving: which publishers are building lists, which agents are busy, and which Australian books are travelling.

Who bought it

The announcement names the imprint and usually the publisher behind it, and often the editor who acquired the book. The editor matters: editors build lists with a clear taste, and following their acquisitions is one of the best ways to understand where a house is heading.

Where it can be sold

Rights are sold by territory and language. World rights let the buyer publish everywhere, in every language, and sell on what it does not publish itself. World English covers English-language editions everywhere. ANZ rights cover Australia and New Zealand only, which is common when a local publisher buys an overseas book or an agent keeps other territories to sell separately.

The territory tells you where a book will travel. The method tells you how much people wanted it.

How it was done

A pre-empt is an offer strong enough to take a book off the table before other publishers can bid. An auction means several publishers competed, in rounds or with best bids. Both signal demand. A deal described as negotiated by an agent tells you who represents the author, and a two- or three-book deal tells you the publisher is investing in a career, not a single title.

What we publish, and what we don’t

Every deal on The Book Source is checked against its source before it goes live, and links back to it. We report advances only when a publisher or agent states the figure publicly. If you have a deal to announce, send it to press@thebooksource.com.au and it will appear on the Deal Sheet once it is confirmed.
